Dressing for the races is big business. And more and more of us are doing it, but apparently less and less of us are getting it right. And those bastions of all things that are right and proper–the big cheeses who make the rules at Royal Ascot–have had enough of all this silly frou frou dressing.

Yep, they are putting down their expensively shod feet and declaring the fascinator a big no-no. Oh no. That’s terrible news for me should I be attending Royal Ascot this year, as I am a fan of the fascinator. And so is my favourite person Princess Kate. This will be big news for her since the fascinator bar applies in the Royal Enclosure, and since she’s royal I’m guessing that’s where she’ll be.

I like a fascinator because you avoid the dreaded hat clash. You know the one when you lean in close to your big hat wearing friend and the brims of your hats collide causing both a wardrobe malfuntion and the abandonment of the wonderful piece of gossip you were going to share.

Anyway if you are intending to go to the Royal Enclosure at Ascot this year keep in mind the following dress code, or they won’t let you in.

For women:

Hats are desirable but anything with a base of less than 4 inches in diameter is not acceptable as a hat. Got that.

Skirts and dresses need to be of a ‘modest length’ and fall just above the knee or below.

Pashminas are banned/barred/disallowed.

Strapless tops (and I assume dresses) are also out.

For men:

Waistcoat and tie are compulsory.

No cravats (Matt Preston is not attending in protest).

Black shoes only. Polished is mandatory.

What do think would happen if Kate lobbed up in a fascinator? Do you think they’d really chuck her out? Probably. They can be very rigid about these sorts of important things. Image

Nope, didn’t think so, but if you did, I have a little clip here that shows a woman’s brain lighting up like a Times Square Christmas tree/

This is how this remarkable feat was accomplished. Nan Wise, a researcher, masturbated while in an MRI so that pictures of her brain could be taken. These were then spliced together to make the video. Now the truly remarkable thing about this entire exercise must be Ms Wise’s ability to bring herself to orgasm in an MRI. I don’t know if you’ve ever been in one but it’s akin to a metal sausage casing with Doctor Who show noises beamed in at intermittent times. This woman must have extraordinary focus.

So here’s the video. Think about it next time you’re coming to climax. That’ll put a dampner on it. Image

Well, according to website Christwire that science teacher was nothing more than a filthy whore with a dirty mouth (personally I thought she was a vindictive old bag but I digress). They’ve come up with a whole lot of alternatives to use instead of vagina. Lucky it’s a pisstake. Some of these are plain disturbing. Imaginative yet disturbing.

I’ve always been one for a fad. If something new comes along, I’m the first one to jump on the bandwagon. Call me gullible, call me credulous, but if there’s something new in town you can guarantee I found it weeks ago, no months ago, gave it a test run and then abandoned it. I may grasp a fad with unbridled enthusiasm, but like a twenty year old after a one-night stand, I quickly move on to a new conquest.

Does anyone remember the kambucha tea craze? I was there. Kambucha tea was elixir of life; ringing any bells all you Gen Xers? Drinking it daily would ensure optimum health, glowing skin, a size ten figure, the secret the universe, and end to poverty—there was nothing it couldn’t do.

For such a wonder product it worked quite simply. You obtained a dinner plate sized mushroom, placed it in a container, covered it with tea and sugar and let it grow for a week in a dark, cool place, then—hey presto, mushroom juice. Sounds like compost, but no, it was the key to a long and healthy life.

Weight loss fads—tried them all—first. Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Atkins, The Zone, and Cabbage Soup are old friends. There’s been green tea, home gyms, and I even had one of the original Jane Fonda tapes which I had to hide from my husband who insisted I fast forward it to the pelvic thrust bit while he watched with his tongue hanging out.

I was the first to aerobic classes. I grapevined right instead of left causing a human pileup in the aerobic room. I was banned. Oh the shame. Since then lots of people have been banished, but it was me who was banished first—I started that fad.

I’ve dabbled in laser eye surgery, chemical peels, facial massage and acupuncture in my quest for youth. I’ve embraced soy, green tea and shark cartilage. I’ve eaten more salmon than a brown bear and I pop fish oil capsules like lollies.

There were a few fads I refused to engage with. I have never had decals on my toenails, I’ve always hated matt lipstick, scrunchies are a crime against hair and there is no way I am ever going to sport a butterfly tattoo on my behind.

There a few things on my fad radar right now—ear candling for one. This is how it works. A burning candle is inserted into the ear (true—I’m not making this up) and wax instantly melts away. I’m not sure where it melts to, but it sounds intriguing. It is also gets rid of headaches. Clean ears and no headaches—it’s got me already.

I’m also keen to give the vibrogym a whirl. Apparently you stand on a vibrating plate and all the shaking gives you defined muscles, eliminates cellulite and is good for your heart health. It has fad, and therefore my name, written all over it.

You probably think I’m a sucker. You’re right, but there’s every chance that there’s a residual effect to all those health and fitness fads and I’ll live to enjoy yet more fads well in to my nineties. You never know I might restart the kambucha tea craze from my vibrating nursing home bed. Image

This is my Gen X Girl column from this week’s Savvy Magazine that appears in the Townsville Bulletin.

It’s no secret that I enjoy a drop of wine. OK, to be fair maybe that could be more than a mere drop, but I’m hardly Robinson Crusoe. Anyway big suck in to me because now I’m definitely going to get breast cancer. Well that’s what some study says anyway.

According to a recent Harvard University study, having one unit of wine a day could increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer by 15%. Having two units of wine a day will increase it by 50%. This is very bad news, especially when you consider that a unit is a piddling 100ml.

Is anyone putting down their glass of sav blanc as this read this riveting piece of information? Didn’t think so. If you’re anything like me you’ve learned to disregard information like this. We’re all suffering from Conflicting Health Theory Overload Syndrome.

Now this is not yet a medically recognised syndrome. I just made it up, but I have every confidence that it’s going to be picked up by the medical profession.

As a practical example of CHTOS let’s take my old friend wine. Wasn’t it only last year that health experts were advocating a couple of glasses a wine for cardio-vascular health? So for the sake of our health we enjoyed our daily tipple, reinforced by the results of another study that says drinkers live longer than kill-joy abstainers. Yippee. Heart beating fine and we’re fun and then along comes the latest study saying that we women are going to get cancer. Stupid sexist study.

Wine’s not the only breast cancer causing culprit out there. Apparently underarm deodorants are a big no-no. Sorry, I’m not giving that up—no one will talk to me. And wide strapped underwire bras are also taboo. That should boost the sale of those hideous ah ha bras that are being flogged on TV at the moment.

We’re also warned to avoid tooth fillings and root canals. I’m not sure that one can avoid a root canal. It’s not as though anyone chooses to have one. It’s more the pain that drives people to pay exorbitant sums of money to dentists rather than an aesthetic but there I go being all judgmental.

Anyway because I read a lot of women’s magazines and spend too much time on the internet I have a wealth of conflicting medical advice that may be helpful to you. So here goes.

Yoga does not make you fit because you mostly lie around a lot.

Bananas can help you give up smoking. A banana costs more than a cigarette.

If your poo looks like little hard balls you are in trouble. Miranda Kerr says so.

Drinking eight glasses of water a day is bunkum.

Your coffee addiction is inherited from your parents. Yes it really is your mother’s fault.

The whiskey diet is true. Lady Gaga said so.

Swearing reduces blood pressure.

Running is bad for you.

Soy can lead to the excessive feminisation of men. Put the soy and linseed bread back on the shelf boys.

30% of men do not wash their hands after going to the toilet. Image

How’s that whole neck cutaway? I would have made an assumption about the boob, waist thing, but the neck thing is really weird. And I never knew Barbie had such highly placed eyebrows. Looks good on Barbie but really weird on a real person. Best not aspire to that look girls.

But the one thing that is really puzzling me is how they plan on getting the whole standing on tippy toes thing that Barbie does so well. Image

Years ago, my mother, suffering delusions of grandeur, used to tell me that she would send me to a Swiss finishing school. Let’s put this in perspective. A girl from Central Queensland who didn’t wear a dress until she was 16, whose favourite activity was playing with racehorses, at a finishing school. You can see why I didn’t take her seriously. I did take her seriously when she threatened to send me to boarding school. That was a real possibility.

Anyway I didn’t think Swiss finishing schools were real. Sure I read about them in the Chalet School books, but that was fiction. Right? Wrong. For one Swiss finishing school has survived the change to the new millennium and continues to offer “social graces” for rich girls.

It’s a place where you can learn to peel a kiwi fruit with cultery, learning to pace oneself while eating so one don’t leave one’shusband in one’s wake and learning from which side to serve the the pear-and-Roquefort tarts (from the left if you must know).

Time magazine reports:

For nearly 60 years, IVP — Switzerland’s last traditional finishing school — has taught women social graces, from floral arrangement and table decoration to the art of serving afternoon tea. Updated annually, its intensive six-week course consists of 216 hours of class and, for those working toward a diploma in international etiquette and protocol, 45 exams. Daily practice brings students up to speed on how to whip up the trendiest desserts — like mascarpone mousse and balsamic cream, a fresh alternative to tiresome tiramisu — and how to gracefully adhere to local customs in 20 countries, including Mexico (where you may shake your waiter’s hand) and Japan (where you should never use chopsticks as decorations in swept-up hair). But contrary to stereotype, the motive is not marriage; it’s money. “Lots of people have M.B.A.s, but few have the extra knowledge we can give them,” says Viviane Néri, the school’s principal. “People now realize that good manners make for good business.”

Clients include princesses, lawyers, Supreme Court judges and the daughters of Prime Ministers. Not that you’d know of course. It’s very discreet. No last names.

A six week course costs $20 000 which includes accommodation, excursions and two meals a day. I’d have fitted right in. Image

I got my toenails shellacked yesterday. They look like beautiful pink jewels and they’re supposed to stay that way for a month. At least that’s what the man said at the nail place where I got them done yesterday. (Don’t bother warning about shopping centre nail shops–I love them).

Anyway I was feeling pretty darn good about my jewel toes, sitting there with them under the UV setting light when my day was spoiled, no ruined, nay absolutely annihilated when the toe nail painting lady uttered that most dreaded question. “So when’s your baby due?”

I’m not pregnant.

I was actually wearing a dress that even Trinny and Susannah would have approved of. All v-necked baby soft jersey with draping over the belly–perfect for the pear shaped woman. Who’s not actually pregnant.

Anyway my first thought was to say “Oh in three months” but then I decided to keep her on the hook “I’m not pregnant. This is my wine baby” was my oh so witty (yet secretly horrified) reply.

But here’s the kicker–she wasn’t even embarrassed. She went on to explain away her mistake by saying that she was confused as my upper part was “quite skinny but your belly is very big”. By this time I was looking for a metal nail file to stab her with. It couldn’t get much worse–you’d think that wouldn’t you–until she decided to give me some exercise advice. “Why don’t you go to the gym?”

I asked for a magazine to read. I’m considering going on yet another diet. I may burn my Trinny and Susannah approved dress. My toes, however, look phenomenal. Image
