Well that’s how I reckon Marcos Baghdatis was feeling right after he was beaten at the Australian Open. Those in the know say it was a veiled message at his racquet sponsor who is no more. I disagree. He just felt like throwing a tantrum. And you might as well be fined for going hard out. Four racquets is always better than one.

Anyway check out Marcos’ tanty. Sorry about the ad. I had terrible trouble finding the footage. Maybe Marcos threw another stirkey and got it banned. Powerful people those tennis people. The ad’s pretty funny too.

It’s no secret that I enjoy a drop of wine. OK, to be fair maybe that could be more than a mere drop, but I’m hardly Robinson Crusoe. Anyway big suck in to me because now I’m definitely going to get breast cancer. Well that’s what some study says anyway.

According to a recent Harvard University study, having one unit of wine a day could increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer by 15%. Having two units of wine a day will increase it by 50%. This is very bad news, especially when you consider that a unit is a piddling 100ml.

Is anyone putting down their glass of sav blanc as this read this riveting piece of information? Didn’t think so. If you’re anything like me you’ve learned to disregard information like this. We’re all suffering from Conflicting Health Theory Overload Syndrome.

Now this is not yet a medically recognised syndrome. I just made it up, but I have every confidence that it’s going to be picked up by the medical profession.

As a practical example of CHTOS let’s take my old friend wine. Wasn’t it only last year that health experts were advocating a couple of glasses a wine for cardio-vascular health? So for the sake of our health we enjoyed our daily tipple, reinforced by the results of another study that says drinkers live longer than kill-joy abstainers. Yippee. Heart beating fine and we’re fun and then along comes the latest study saying that we women are going to get cancer. Stupid sexist study.

Wine’s not the only breast cancer causing culprit out there. Apparently underarm deodorants are a big no-no. Sorry, I’m not giving that up—no one will talk to me. And wide strapped underwire bras are also taboo. That should boost the sale of those hideous ah ha bras that are being flogged on TV at the moment.

We’re also warned to avoid tooth fillings and root canals. I’m not sure that one can avoid a root canal. It’s not as though anyone chooses to have one. It’s more the pain that drives people to pay exorbitant sums of money to dentists rather than an aesthetic but there I go being all judgmental.

Anyway because I read a lot of women’s magazines and spend too much time on the internet I have a wealth of conflicting medical advice that may be helpful to you. So here goes.

  1. Yoga does not make you fit because you mostly lie around a lot.
  2. Bananas can help you give up smoking. A banana costs more than a cigarette.
  3.  If your poo looks like little hard balls you are in trouble. Miranda Kerr says so.
  4.  Drinking eight glasses of water a day is bunkum.
  5. Your coffee addiction is inherited from your parents. Yes it really is your mother’s fault.
  6. The whiskey diet is true. Lady Gaga said so.
  7. Swearing reduces blood pressure.
  8. Running is bad for you.
  9. Soy can lead to the excessive feminisation of men. Put the soy and linseed bread back on the shelf boys.
  10. 30% of men do not wash their hands after going to the toilet. Image

It wasn’t one of those life defining moments like say the death of Kennedy or Princess Diana, but still quite significant to those of us who vicariously live our lives through those who populate trash mags.

There was that whole Jen/Angelina tshirt thing. We all took sides, had a lot to say–but from those involved, not much was said. There was no snipey tshirt with “I Survived Maria” as sported by Arnold Schwarzenegar last week. Nothing much at all except for that dreadful Vanity Fair cover where Brad and Angelina when all happy mid-Western family, ostentatiously to promote their movie, but it sort of came across rubbing Jen’s nose in it.

We should have taken it as a sign that Brad was a bit of an insensitive arsehole–a good-looking one, but a prick all the same. But then he’s all Benjamin Button, Joe Black and Ocean’s Eleven cool, so it was dismissed as a momentary lapse of judgment. Until this week when the term insensitive arsehole can once again be bandied about.

Brad is in massive back-pedal mode at the moment as he tried to justify his recent comments about his marriage to Jennifer Aniston which he describes as a sham.

“It became very clear to me that I was intent on trying to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn’t living an interesting life myself,” Pitt told Parade magazine.

“I think my marriage had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn’t.”

All I can say to those comments is why, Brad, why? Why trash a woman and a marriage that you humiliated six years ago? Let bygones be bygones. Trashing a past relationship is just so not classy.

Anyway Brad is regretting his nasty little comments, using the old it was taken out of context routine. I find it difficult to understand how direct quotes like those above can be taken out of context but maybe I’m cynical.

So Brad, my advice. Be careful what you wish for. You’ve certainly got your interesting life now, with your six children. Actually it sounds like hell to me, but interesting is what he wanted and interesting is what he got. And all of us here in the real (and let’s be honest uninteresting world) now think a little less of you.

And by the by, lose the facial hair that you are more frequently sporting and cut your bloody hair. Your hotness has decreased by a factor of ten. Image

Here are a few choice facts:

  • 8.2 seconds is how long it takes for someone to register a romatic attraction (unless it is Hugh Jackman–average time 2.1 seconds)
  • Potential sugar daddies won’t stare you down as their time is too precious (or their cataracts too thick)
  • Palms up give an air of openess and vulnerability (hmm–or someone is waiting for you to buy them a drink)
  • Women like men who are already attached (I doubt this–too much trouble).

They are my bad boy of choice. Now I appreciate the modern day boy ranger equivalent would be a mere convenience store robber, but still there is something very manly about a bushranger. Which is why I am taken with Wild Boys that aired last night.

Now please don’t think I’m delusional and that I believe all bushrangers look like the fetching Daniel McPherson (and oh my goodness who knew he could man up like that). I know they were probably filthy, tooth-missing, rum swilling louts but there is one who was none of these things. I’m referrring to my favourite bushranger of all–Ben Hall.

Now unlike Ned Kelly, who for some bizarre reason is considered a hero, Ben Hall really was a victim of time and place. So for a little Australian history lesson–the potted biography on Ben Hall.

The son of former convicts, Ben Hall grew up in country New South Wales where he eventually became a stockman. When he was 19 he married Bridget who was a prize strumpet. He bought some land and set himself up as a grazier. He was wrongly accused of a crime, was aquitted but when he got home found his property ransacked and that madam of a wife of his gone with their son. I think she was his undoing–I blame her, I truly do. Anyway Ben lost the missus, the kid and the farm so he went bad and he formed a gang.

He was a pretty good bushranger in that he was very organised. So he and his gang went around the place, robbing and stealing from rich folk in an organised fashion. He stole racehorses which is the equivalent of stealing a WRX as a getaway car. He was reportedly quite polite too and courteous to women–you’ve got to like that. He actually held up a town for three days, fed and entertained the township, made the local policeman perform like a dancing monkey and then paid his bar tab.

Anyway as these things tend to go the police hunted him, his gang was either killed or disbanded and a reward was placed on his head. And due to the fact that there is no honour amongst thieves, a friend of a friend dobbed him in, the police used him as target practice and Ben Hall died, four days short of his 29th birthday. So sad.

So now you know about Ben Hall–you’ll sleep well tonight with that knowlege. And I don’t think the picture I’ve got with this does him justice. I imagine him much better looking than that, sort of like Brad Pitt when he’s not doing that seedy look. Image

Three weeks in fact. Feeling very sorry for myself. So sorry in fact that my daughter thinks I may have manflu. She showed me the website and it seems that it is a genuine condition.

Now I don’t have manflu, but I will admit that the site made me laugh, and I may just exhibit a few of the manflu tendencies due to my hypochondriacal nature. Anyway with flu season well and truly here, here is some information directly from the site.

  • Man Flu is simply a cold, the symptoms of which are greatly exaggerated by men.
    FALSE – Man Flu is a serious and potentially life threatening illness, and will no doubt soon be on the Health and Safety Executive’s list of Reportable Diseases. Man Flu is a distinct disease in its own right, and should not be misdiagnosed as a mere common cold.
  • Women can catch Man Flu
    FALSE – Man Flu does not attack humans with the XX chromosome, only those with the XY chromosome. This genetic mutation effectively immunises females against Man Flu. This may account for the reason that women widely believe that Man Flu is actually just the common cold, but with a bit of extra drama thrown in for good measure.
  • The best way to deal with Man Flu is to just ‘get on with it’
    FALSE – Extensive research has proven that the only way to combat the crippling effects of Man Flu is complete withdrawal to the sofa and uninterrupted mollycoddling by the girlfriend / wife.
  • Men have a slower recovery rate from Man Flu than women do from the common cold
    TRUE – The effects of Man Flu can linger for days and days, compared with just a few hours for the common cold. If the man is not permitted the correct period of convalescence following an attack of Man Flu he can be plunged back into a critical condition.
  • Man Flu is just a way for men to get sympathy / time off work / time in front of the telly
    FALSE – Man Flu is a bona-fide and debilitating illness, would men make a meal of that sort of thing?
  • The pain and suffering of Man Flu is similar to that of child birth
    TRUE – Though at least with child birth it’s all done and dusted in a few hours, but Man Flu can last for weeks…
  • The best cure for Man Flu is a cocktail of Night Nurse, Day Nurse, chicken noodle soup and whiskey.
    FALSE – There is no cure for Man Flu. Once infected the afflicted can only hope that the gods roll the dice in favour of life rather than slow, lingering death.
  • While suffering from Man Flu, men would like nothing more than to go to work and try to forget about their affliction.
