Just a Gen X girl in the world

We’ve been a long, long time together

It was my husband’s and my 23rd wedding anniversary yesterday. How lovely. Been married all that time people say. So it’s quite ironic that the one news item that did catch my attention yesterday was the launching of two cheater’s websites.

Far more interesting than Kevin Rudd’s disdain of Ken Henry’s tax reforms. Nearly as interesting as Alf winning the Gold Logie for 22 years in Home and Away. Gosh I’ve been married for one more year than Alf’s been on Home and Away. That is a long time. I see why people say that now.

Anyway back to the cheater’s sites one of which is maintained by AshleyMadison.com. The motto of the site is Life is short. Have an affair. Delightful.

I’m not quite sure what the thought process would be here. Do you wake up one day, find the thoughts of having an affair pervading your psyche coupled with the realisation that life is short and then log on to the Ashley Madison site? Gosh you’d have to wonder what your spouse did to you that night, or maybe didn’t do, to trigger that reaction or was there a health scare. Who knows?

There’s a whole FAQ section that you can get on to to find out the ins and outs (ha ha) of the operation. One thing that I did think could be problematic was how your account is paid online. Apparently if you direct debit it appears as AshlyMdson on your account. Don’t think your partner would have to be Einstein to figure out what was going on there.

But if you’re looking for a bit of variety you can always sign up with Gleeden.com, a delightful on-line community that offers a meeting place for married people without “fear of judgment”. Hmm.

As you probably know I would be useless on Gleeden.com because I’m all about the judgment. You know as a society we’ve come to use the work judge like it’s a dirty word. Since when did judging become such a bad thing? How many times have you heard a teenager utter profound statements such as “you don’t get to judge me.” Well yes I do, I’m your parent/teacher/responsible adult. I can judge you. Your behaviour was shit. Judgment delivered.

You went to a website specifically to have an affair. Here’s the phone number of my solicitor and I get the house. Judgment is a good thing.

Actually while I’m in judge mode I’ll go so far as to say this. I’m not a moralistic prude (I know people always say this but it’s true). People stuff up. They have affairs, the world doesn’t end and marriages don’t need to either, unless of course you are Sandra Bullock or Elin Woods, then you should end your marriage because you were conned about the sort of men you were marrying. Actually Sandra Bullock you weren’t, you were just stupid, the bloke had dickhead written (quite literally) all over him.

But I think going to affair sites like AshleyMadison and Gleeden are adding a whole new moral and ethical layer to cheating–if there is such a thing as ethical cheating. It’s a bit like murder. Attractive person in bar, too many drinks, hotel room visit, etc is quite similar to manslaughter if there was no intent, even if it keeps on going. However going to a website with the express aim of getting laid is more like premeditated murder. For me my judgment is all about the intent.

So how popular do you think these websites will be in Australia? The pickup rate for women so far is about one third. I find that interesting. Honestly I don’t know where they get the energy. Do they have kids, how do they afford it, what will the consequences be? And there will be consequences. It’s all fun and games till someone loses an eye. Image
