A room of his own

When Posh Spice and Becks were buying their LA house a few years back, one of the shopping criteria was two main bedrooms, one for him and one for her. Of course everyone sang oooh aaah, their marriage is in trouble, but they’re still together so I guess everything was OK.

But what a sensible idea, his and her bedrooms. I want that in my house.

Have a think about it. When you were a kid, what did you want most in the world (except for a pash from David Cassidy)? Yep, that’s right, a room of your own. And now you’re a grownup what have you got? A shared bedroom. And it’s not just a shared bedroom, it’s a shared bed.

Now apart from the obvious reason of easy sex convenience, can anyone convince me of the benefits of a shared bedroom? For me it means that I have to listen to my husband’s snoring. Pushing him on his side doesn’t work anymore and loudly shouting shut up has no effect, so my peaceful slumber is interrupted all night long (unless I chuck him out and he has to sleep in the spare room). So why not make it permanent and give him a room of his own?

Anyway Posh, Becks and I are not alone in thinking this is a good idea. US statistics suggest that 23% of couple sleep in separate bedrooms. The fact that some of these choose to sleep in their children’s bedroom suggests a whole new set of psychological issues, but for those who’ve tried it there are few complaints.

Reasons for separate bedrooms include snoring (right there with you sister), shift work, insomnia (guilty), early risers, watching TV in bed, disagreement on room temperature and teeth grinding. Goodness gracious, we’re not cranky, we’re just sleep deprived.

Of course they’ve given sleep interruptions caused by your partner a kick-arse name spousal arousal. Sounds all sexual doesn’t it. Try telling your husband you’re kicking him out of bed because of spousal arousal and poor fellow’s going to think he’s turned into a sex god in his sleep and now you’re punishing him!

Anyway 60% of new upper-middle-class homes will have double master bedrooms in the next five years. That Posh Spice, she’s always bang on trend.
