Does your plate say “Slow down fatso”?

Just what we all need, a talking plate that nags us when we’re eating too fast.
 
Is it not bad enough that we’re told to eat less fat (or is that more this week), or that carbs are good for us, or maybe they’re bad, can’t remember, now we’ve got a set of smartarse scales telling us to slow down when we eat.
 
Obviously the inventor of this machine has never been confronted by a plate of raspberry brownies that demand that they be inhaled, in as short a time possible, preferably before anyone else gets a go at them. Wonder what the scales would have to say about that?
 
 
 

According to My Digital Life  (just skip this extract if technical doo da is not your thing, or if you have a short attention span), the idea behind the Mandometer (the fancy name for the talking plate) is to train overweight people to eat more slowly so that they will feel fuller soon, therefore eating less leading to weightloss
 
 
 
 
 

An 18 month study conducted by researchers at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children in Britain has indicated that the Mandometer is an effective tool to combat obesity in children and teens. The team tested 106 clinically obese patients ranging in age from nine to 17 years old. Some of the patients had to use the Mandometer while the others received standard anti-obesity treatment. All of them were urged to practice some form of physical exercise for 60 minutes a day and to follow a healthy diet.

The results of the study were published in an article in the British Medical Journal. When participants were assessed a year into the study, the Body Mass Index (BMI) of the group who had used the Mandometer had fallen by an average of 2.1%, which is about three times more than the group who had received the standard treatment. At the end of the study 18 months later, those results still held steady.

The group who had used the Mandometer was also eating smaller portions of food (about 45 grams less than before) by the end of the study.

The race to slow down was also won by the Mandometer group. At the end of the study, their eating speed had been reduced by about 11%, while the standard care group was eating 4% faster.

 

Don’t those results seem a little lame to you? BMI has fallen 2.1%. Pathetic I say. And reducing portions by 45 grams. That’s two tablespoons (flattened ones, not heaped ones).  Hardly worthwhile. I think results might have to be a little more dramatic than that before we start trotting out to our local cafes with a demanding dinner plate.  The embarrassment factor alone would be enough.

 

Imagine it.  Sitting there with Mr Potentially Right, candlelight dinner, champagne and the talking plate.  Put the fork down.  Chew twenty times. Do you really want that second piece of bread? Don’t even consider ordering dessert. It would be like having Richard Simmons at the table.
